Felty Selkie

A selkie is a shape-shifter. Sometimes seal, sometimes woman. The selkie's shape-shifting power is in their seal-skin, without the skin they cannot return to the freedom of seal form.

Like the big eyes of seals, selkie tales are usually sad.

All of us need to run away to the wilds sometimes to stay alive don't we? Make sure you look after your seal-skin.

Some of my best friends are seals

I have been a seal you know,

That is why my eyes are so wet,

I am a human for eating

(because I like tea & toast & mimolette)

But a seal for sleeping,

For the rock & lull of the sea,

"Some of my best friends are seals", you say

"But not me", I reply

"I am only your friend when I am a woman,

with my seal-skin on I am angry & fishy

you would not like me"

"I think I could forgive the fish for the eyes"

"No, no", I object-

"They would pull you in and

you would drown,

Let us eat together

But not sleep together"
